Stage Directing

Stage directing apprentices will work as assistant directors on our fully staged opera productions with orchestra, directed and coached by the renowned faculty of Prague Summer Nights. With the guidance of the main stage director, apprentices may have the opportunity to direct a scene from these operas.

Directing apprentices will have the opportunity to direct several scenes on a fully staged opera scenes program, which will include sections from important Czech operas such as Rusalka and Prodaná nevěsta (The Bartered Bride), in addition to standard operatic repertoire.

Prague Summer Nights is also looking for qualified young Stage Managers with previous experience to stage manage the opera scenes program as well as the opera performances at the Estates Theater. This can be a once in a life time resume building and learning opportunity. Work in an international environment with professional Prague Summer Nights faculty and local theatre staff.

DUTIES MIGHT INCLUDE:

  • Acting as a liaison between members of the Opera productions, the festival Administration and the Czech production team.
  • Attending and assisting in all rehearsals, taking important notes (for example on blocking and technical needs).
  • Assisting in coordinating set changes.
  • Coordinating with the prop-master at Estates Theatre to arrange props for rehearsals.
  • Recording all technical and lighting cues into the prompt score and distributing to all involved production departments as needed.
  • Calling the show in dress rehearsals and performances, including all technical and lighting cues, conductor and actor calls.
  • Coordinating supertitles with the Estates Theatre and supertitles operator.

  • Mentoring by Prague Summer Nights stage directors, as assistant on either opera to be performed
  • Attend diction coachings and vocal specific masterclasses
  • Take ownership over directing scenes in the opera scenes program
  • Perform stage manager duties in one of Europe’s most renowned opera houses
  • Upon request: Performance preparation, resume building, social media and networking
  • Opportunities to meet European casting directors, theater directors and conductors

Performance Opportunities

  • Possible scene direction of Le Nozze di Figaro or Die Zauberflöte
  • Direct Opera Scenes in a historic theater
  • Act as stage manager during the main opera performances
